Essay on Media English : from Acronym to PC

神奈川県茅ヶ崎市 This paper deals with media English which appears in printed media such as newspapers and magazines. Although the demand by the Japanese that they be able to read media English with ease is increasing tremendously, it is not an easy task for them to handle as new words and expressions are being born almost daily. Surely, media English is a living English that reflects the reality of society most vividly. That's why the background information is most important for thorough understanding of each piece of news reports, articles, etc. This paper, therefore, discusses how new words as well as expressions in some cases have been made and transformed. It also refers to euphemisms, p.c. phenomina and sensitive expressions on minorities. Media English とは新聞、雑誌など活字メディアに現れた英語という意味である。本稿はその中でも、読解という「受信の仕方」を中心にまとめた。日本人の Media English に対する需要は、まず「新聞、雑誌が楽に読める」ことに主眼があると思われるからだ。 Media English のレベルは、普通母国語の高校卒業生程度の読解力が目安といわれる。一般的に言って「高校卒プラス社会経験三～五年」あたりに読者レベルを設定するのが、英語圏、日本語圏にかかわらず、大衆社会の現実であろう。 Media English なるものは広義の現代英語に含まれていて、画然とした境界線があるわけではないが、この分野は、新語、新表現がやたらに創出されて、目まぐるしく変化する「生きた英語」であり、その社会の「現実の姿」を最もビビッドに表出するものであることは論を俟たない。もっとも、はかない寿命で終わる表現、語彙も数多いから、その「一過性」の見極めが Media English 研究の困難なところであり、英語研究の伝統的権威が Media English 研究に対し、正当性付与に躊躇する根源的な理由でもあろう。しかし、外国人の英語研究者、あるいは英語圏地域研究者の立場からすれば、Media Engiish 研究という分野は当然あってよいし、実用性から見れば、不可決の研究分野と言えよう。 本稿では、Media English の文体、見出し語など、比較的容易な特色への言及は他に譲り、語彙、表現を中心に社会的背景の中で、Media English がどう生成、変遷してきたかなどを中心に捉えて行きたい
