Bloom-forming algae Phaeocystis globosa is one of the most successful blooming algae in the oceans due to its capacity to sense grazer-associated chemical cues and respond adaptively to these grazer-specific cues with opposing shifts in phenotype. P. globosa produces toxic and deterrent compounds as chemical defenses. However, the origin of the signals and underlying mechanisms that triggered the morphological and chemical defenses remain enigmatic.
