Atherosclerotic plaque formation in coronary arteries is caused by mechanical factors related to a blood flow disturbance, and by factors damaging coronary arteries that lead to impaired cell signaling, cell growth, secretion and apoptosis. Coronary artery calcifications occur in one third of patients with a coronary artery disease mainly in late stages of the disease. Coronary artery calcifications are localized in intima or media. Calcifications in intima are related to advanced age, arterial hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and smoking.
