This article presents an approach to the military orders based on the question of whether they functioned as an element of cohesion in the formation of imagined communities that preceded the creation of Spain as a nation-state. It is necessary to question, from a transnational approach, how mobility and the very formation of aristocratic networks developed, and how these would end up transcending the current modern national borders. It problematises the use of the term "protonationalisation", and the need for new approaches to understanding cultural dynamics. The article reviews a brief evolution of the literature on the military orders in Spain, which is necessary to better understand their role in the processes of nation-state formation.E...
