Swine are routinely used for studying human cardiopulmonary diseases due to similarities in anatomy and physiology, and for being close to humans in phylogeny. A swine model of chlorine inhalation injury recapitulated key human acute respiratory distress syndrome, including but not limited to hypoxemia, impaired respiratory physiological parameters, impaired pulmonary function, neutrophilic alveolitis, deposition of hyaline membranes in alveoli, formation of microthrombi in pulmonary parenchyma, and cytokine storm. Two different kinds of potential forensic diagnostic biomarkers have been identified in swine plasma and lung tissues.</p
