The aim of this article is to examine the conceptions about death and understand how the destruction of a singular thing occurs, from the perspective of Spinozian philosophy. In addition to entering into the propositions that address the issue of death, we dialogued with commentators on Spinoza's work who dedicated themselves to analyzing this theme. We note that there is not always a consensus among them and we proceeded to return to the philosopher's writings to resolve any controversies. We reread an example used by Spinoza to illustrate the perseverance in being – namely, the lit candle – and we propose an alternative interpretation to those found among his commentators.
