Campus Above : Higher education on rooftops

This project explores the opportunities of rooftop landscapes for outdoor learning and socialization on the main campus of the University of British Columbia. By looking at the functions of higher education institutions and the current world-wide challenges and opportunities, I was able to frame the topic for further exploration. To better study the rooftop landscapes and the relation to campus design, some articles on relevant topics were selected for literature review. These topics include the importance of campus design, the UBC main campus plan in the next thirty years, the green roof technical structures and the pros and cons of outdoor learning. These literatures provide great insight and argument for the topic selection. The precedent studies was a fun part where I searched for projects that share a similar topic. I was able to find inspiring projects that I can analyze and learn from. To select a site for design proposal, I made a matrix of criteria which is meant to be used as a tool for future projects with a similar topic.
