Outfitting Architecture : A Clothing Inspired Approach to Adaptability

Buildings are constantly impacted by changes in their surroundings, from their occupants, to the weather, and longer term climatic changes. Traditional approaches to building design often overlook the need for adaptability and responsiveness to these changing conditions. In order to address this, I turned to a well-tested precedent for designing for adaptability: clothing. Clothing changes rapidly, constantly adapting to meet the needs of the wearer. Inspired by the flexibility and adaptability of clothing, this design project explores how we can re-dress existing buildings to respond to the changing needs of their occupants and their surrounding environment.
