There is currently a global shortage of qualified teachers. Education systems in many countries are struggling to attract and retain high quality candidates for teaching despite multitudes of initiatives and huge financial investments. This thesis identifies and proposes key determinants of individuals’ decisions or motivations for choosing teaching as a career or not and their long-term commitment to teaching. Understanding this will help to identify appropriate strategies to attract and retain teachers.
