This work discusses metal and metal oxide nanostructure application for protein analyte biosensing in optical and/or piezoelectric methods. Out of all summarized, porous aluminium oxide, zinc oxide nanowires and thin gold films were identified to be in possession of suitable chemical properties, such as stability and biocompatibility. This work includes methods of nanostructure synthesis, functionalization and surface application towards biosensing. This work introduces utilised measurement methods of spectroscopic ellipsometry, total internal reflection ellipsometry and hybrid method of spectroscopic ellipsometry/quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation.
