This study investigates in a comparative way the new social movements (NSMs) in 4 countries of Western Europe: Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. We have focused our attention on 5 movements: for peace, environmentalists, homosexuals, solidarity and urban autonomists. We have targeted 3 levels of analysis: action (protest events), organization (organization of social movements) and interaction (action campaigns). The general hypthesis is that the development of NSMs is largely influenced by the political context, including the political opportunities structure (POS).
