Wiederholungsbefragung zum Schweizer Arbeitsmarktsurvey - 2000

Advancing globalization, expansion of the service sector, and the rapid spread of new technology on the job are bringing about rapid changes in working life. The goals of the project are: a) to describe the essential aspects of this change and b) to explain new patterns of employment behavior - especially that of women. Issue a) places stress on the 'objective' side of working conditions (equipping jobs, information use, Internet access, telemonitoring, working time regularities, etc.) as well as the subjective side of work values. A central aspect of work distribution is addressed by issue b). A long-term trend ofincreasing employment activity for women can be observed in all industrialized countries with the expansion of the service sector and the equalization of gender-specific training chances. However, notable differences in extent and pace of the process exist from country to country. Country-specific differences are not explainable using the usual labor supply function in the economy based on individual workforce characteristics (education,professional experience, etc.). What is new in the planned study is an explanation of employment behavior that gives special consideration to country-specific context (sociopolitical regulations, child care facilities, etc.), not just the individual characteristics of the workforce, the family situation, and employment biography. The analysis of employment biography also allows linkage to experiences in other countries through survey of quantitative life-course data. In connection with corresponding statistical techniques, retrospective longitudinal data have proved especially suitable in describing and explaining processes of social-structural change. The database will be the planned survey within the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) as well as the dataset of the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS). While the ISSP thematic stress is directed primarily to the 'subjective' side of work attitudes, the LIS data give more precise information on the 'objective' characteristics of the workforce. Especially for studying employment behavior in international comparison, the LIS data represent an important supplement. The membership of Switzerland in the LIS user circle should be renewed with the proposed project. This would permit Swiss researchers general access to this database.Eine fortschreitende Globalisierung, die Expansion des Dienstleistungssektors und die rasche Verbreitung neuer Technologien am Arbeitsplatz bringen eine Menge Veränderungen des Arbeitslebens mit sich. Das Forschungsprojekt beschreibt: a) die wesentlichen Aspekte dieser Veränderungen und erklärt b) neue Formen des Arbeitsverhaltens, speziell dasjenige von Frauen. Dabei bezieht sich Punkt a) vor allem auf die 'objektiven' Aspekte der Arbeitsverhältnisse (working conditions) wie z.B. Arbeitsplatzausstattung, Informationsnutzung, Internetzugang, Telearbeit, Arbeitszeitregulierungen u.a. sowie auf die subjektive Seite der Arbeitswerte (work orientation). Ein zentraler Aspekt der Arbeitsverteilung wird dagegen von Punkt b) behandelt. Ein langfristig anhaltender Trend erhöhter Arbeitsbeteiligungen von Frauen kann in allen Industrienationen im Einklang mit der Zunahme des Dienstleistungssektors sowie mit der Gleichstellung von geschlechtsspezifischen Ausbildungschancen beobachtet werden, wobei insbesondere Unterschiede zwischen Nationen deutlich werden. Diese länderspezifischen Unterschiede lassen sich jedoch nicht mit den gängigen ökonomischen Arbeitsangebotsfunktionen erklären, welche v.a. auf individuellen Merkmalen beruhen (Ausbildung, Arbeitserfahrung, etc.). Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts wird das Arbeitsverhalten zusätzlich aufgrund von länderspezifischen Merkmalen (soziopolitische Regulationen, Kinderbetreuungsmöglichkeiten, etc.) und nicht nur auf der Basis individueller Charakteristiken der Arbeitsleistung, der Familiensituation und der Beschäftigungsbiographie untersucht. Gerade die Analyse der Beschäftigungsbiographie erlaubt es, anhand von quantitativen Lebensverlaufsdaten, die Verbindung zu ausländischen Daten zu ermöglichen. In Verbindung mit statistischen Verfahren haben sich retrospektive Längsschnittdaten als speziell geeignet erwiesen, den Prozess des soziostrukturellen Wandels zu untersuchen und zu erklären
