Local democracy is undoubtedly related to the size of the municipality. So far, however, we know little about this influence. Neither theoretically nor empirically has this question been substantiated so far. Some believe that there is more participation in larger municipalities, others believe that this is the case in smaller municipalities. In Switzerland, the participation of citizens of very small municipalities is consistently higher with regard to voting and participation in municipal assemblies.
