While traditional views of idioms assume that they are semantically non analizable and arbitrary since their meanings are non-compositional, a research on Italian idioms that I have undertaken adopting the cognitive theory of metaphor has shown that most idioms are semantically analizable by conceptual metaphors that motivate the link between an idiom and its figurative meanings. The main results of the research are presented and briefly discussed in this paper.1n
