Women who have experienced preeclampsia have a greatly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life, often at a young age. Despite this knowledge, there is still no good routine post-pregnancy monitoring to identify personal risk in order to use the risk factors present to reduce the risk. Traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, probably play an important role in this increased risk in the years after pregnancy.
