That is, promotional practices aimed at creating, communicating and managing versions of national identity to advance economic or political goals. These practices—badged as ‘nation branding’, ‘public diplomacy’, ‘country branding’ or ‘soft power—emerged more than two decades ago, in a context characterised by the proliferation of digital communication technologies, the intensification of globalisation and international cooperation, and the shift in the balance of power from states to market forces.
