The eating disorders are severe psychiatric illnesses with significant morbidity and mortality that exhibit statistically significant familial risk and heritability, providing support for a molecular genetic approach toward defining etiological factors. An emerging candidate gene literature has concentrated on serotinergic and dopaminergic candidates.
