Protonophores have several different perturbative effects on dissolved O2 concentrations in continuous cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As well as uncoupling energy conservation from mitochondrial electron transport in vivo, they reset ultradian clock-driven respiratory oscillations and produce cell cycle effects.
