Surveying the conservation landscape

This report responds to the CyMAL and National Library of Wales (NLW), Aberystwyth request to revisit three key recommendations from the 2000 Lisc report ‘The Future of our Recorded Past’. The research considered whether these recommendations had been actioned, remained valid or required further actions. The author reviewed a range of relevant strategy documents and interviewed leading figures representing key stakeholders in the preservation and care of the collections in Wales. The report found that actions had happened under each recommendation, that in general the recommendations were still considered a priority but that each should be adapted in the light of actions in the last decade. The report looks at how museums, archives and libraries in Wales can work together to care for collections. The report identifies strategic priorities for conservation and collections care in Wales. These include: * defining and communicating a national strategy for conservation of documentary collections with the sector * developing a set of nationally agreed strategic principles for conservation and preservation *developing a scheme to encourage leadership within the conservation sector
