Caracterización y clasificación de los productores del altiplano oeste potosino, México: una propuesta de tipología multidimensional

Population growth and its demands make the agriculture and livestock sector increasingly more dynamic and complex, therefore, making typologies become frameworks for the development of public policies, especially for arid and semi-arid regions. The objectives of this study were: (i) to create a multidimensional typology that integrates the characterization and classification of diverse types of agriculture (CTA) with the characterization and classification of the types of farmers (CTF); and (ii) to identify the agriculture and livestock dynamics of the Western Potosino High Plateau region using a multidimensional typology. A total of 1044 farmers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed using cluster analysis as grouping technique. The crops of bean, maize, chili and onion, and the cattle and sheep livestock were the base of the agricultural and livestock income and they were the main productive chains of the region. Six types of CTA were identified, all mixed systems seek to provide greater certainty in income, and five types of CTF; the least capitalized were the most representative of the region (52.9 %). When combining CTA and CTF to create a multidimensional typology, it was observed that the main strategy of survival is based on pluriactivity and access to social programs and subsidies, where the non-agriculture and livestock activities represent more than 50 % of the family income. It can be concluded that there is a need for a paradigm shift from considering farmers as “rural employees†and not merely as farmers or peasants, generating the need for rural policies that takes into account this new paradigm.El crecimiento poblacional y sus demandas hacen que el sector agropecuario sea cada vez más dinámico y complejo, situación que retoma la importancia de la tipología como un instrumento para el desarrollo de políticas públicas, especialmente para zonas áridas y semiáridas. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron: (i) crear una tipología multidimensional que integre la caracterización y clasificación de los tipos de agricultura (CTA) con la caracterización y clasificación de los tipos de productores (CTP); e (ii) identificar las dinámicas agropecuarias de la región Altiplano Oeste Potosino utilizando una tipología multidimensional. La investigación tuvo como base 1044 encuestas, los datos fueron analizados utilizando como técnica de agrupación el análisis clúster. Los cultivos de frijol, maíz, chile, cebolla y ganado bovino y ovino son la base del ingreso agropecuario y son las principales cadenas productivas de la región. Se identificaron seis tipos de CTA, todos sistemas mixtos que buscan brindar mayor certidumbre en el ingreso, y cinco tipos de CTP; los menos capitalizados fueron los más representativos de la región (52.9 %). Al combinar CTA con CTP para crear una tipología multidimensional se observó que la principal estrategia de supervivencia se basa en la pluriactividad y el acceso a programas sociales y subsidios, donde las labores no agropecuarias representan más de 50 % del ingreso familiar. Se concluye sobre la necesidad de un cambio de paradigma al considerárseles como “empleados rurales†y no como productores ocampesinos, generando la necesidad de una política rural queconsidere esta realidad
