In recent years, the use of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in EFL classrooms has been increasing. Research indicates that there are benefits of using CMC for language learning. Students who are silent in face-to-face communication contribute in CMC discussion. As well, it is the students who contribute the least in face-to-face discussion who increase their participation the most in CMC discussion. An increase in the total production of target language has also been claimed. However, there is sufficient evidence to cast doubt on the acceptance of claims of benefits for all language students.
