Mutations environnementales et systèmes socio-économiques en Grande Limagne (Massif central) de l’Âge du Fer au Moyen Âge

International audienceThe more intensive archaeological and paleoenvironmental research in the Grande Limagne near Clermont-Ferrand in the 1990s has led to a reconsideration of knowledge and questioning on the relationship between societies and environments, especially during the Iron Age and the Roman period. The present paper offers a preliminary regional synthesis based on the data of spatial archaeology and geomorphology. Even though the authors are aware that there is no simple correlation between land occupation and the processes of sedimentation, the confrontation of results separately obtained in each discipline allows them to identify three major phases characterised by socio-economic systems and environmental processes that are specific and obviously interrelated : – the first covers the greater part of the Iron Age ; – the second extends from the end of the Iron Age to late Antiquity ; – the third begins in late Antiquity and extends into the early Middle Ages.L'intensification des recherches archéologiques et paléoenvironnementales dans la Grande Limagne de Clermont-Ferrand au cours des années 90 a conduit à un profond renouvellement des connaissances et des problématiques sur les relations sociétés-milieux, en particulier pour l'âge du Fer et l'époque romaine. Cette contribution esquisse une première synthèse régionale en s'appuyant sur les données de l'archéologie spatiale et de la géomorphologie. Même si les auteurs sont bien conscients du fait qu'il n'existe pas de corrélation simple entre occupation du sol et dynamiques sédimentaires, la confrontation des résultats acquis indépendamment dans chaque discipline permet d'individualiser trois grandes phases caractérisées par des systèmes socio-économiques et des processus environnementaux spécifiques et visiblement liés : – la première couvre la plus grande partie de l'âge du Fer ; – la seconde s'étend de la fin de l'âge du Fer à la fin de l'Antiquité ; – la troisième débute à la fin de l'Antiquité et se poursuit dans le haut Moyen Âge
