STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES IN IMPROVING THEIR SPEAKING SKILL AT DARUL HIKMAH MODERN ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL TULUNGAGUNG

This study aims to determine the speaking learning strategies used by students in Darul Hikmah Modern Islamic Boarding School at Tulungagung, which in learning they still uses conventional methods and without using technology at all. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method with the method of collecting data are observation and in-depth interviews on several students, teachers and caregivers of Islamic boarding schools. Some of these students will be selected according to the criteria that have been determined by the researcher. The formulation of research problems of this study are: 1) What are the students’ strategies to improv their speaking skills in Darul Hikmah Modern Islamic Boarding School? 2) What is the impact in use strategy to the students speaking skill mastery? The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Hubberman techniques, namely data reduction, data collection, and verification and drawing conclusions. The results of this study are learning strategies that are always beneficial for every student at every level of education. In the practice of learning strategies, almost all students may not understand what is meant by learning strategies, but researchers know their learning strategies from their explanations of habitual activities. Based on the data that has been discussed and analyzed by the researchers, this study concludes as follows: 1) The learning strategy used is by listening to audio and memorizing vocabulary, 2) The impact of using the strategy is divided into two categories, namely positive and negative. The positive impact is that students can master speaking skills well and the negative impact is limited access to audio and the use of language in Islamic boarding schools is still dominated by Arabic. Furthermore, research on student learning strategies has implications for educational theory. Student learning strategies are very important to be known by students and teachers, because every student at every level of education always has a strategy to enrich their achievements and for teachers it will be easier to manage programs or in teaching if the teacher knows student learning strategies.
