Worldwide, there is growing concern about the role of drug driving in road crashes. To better understand the problem, this research investigated the personal, social, and legal factors contributing to drug driving. It included a systematic review of the existing literature and a large-scale survey of drivers. The key factors associated with drug driving were higher levels of drug dependence, successfully avoiding detection in the past and anticipating greater rewards for the behaviour. The findings indicate that a comprehensive approach is required to counteract the problem including more effective enforcement practices and rehabilitation programs for those caught drug driving
