La métaphysique spéculative dʼAlain Badiou: de la dialectique du fini et de l'infini jusqu'à une version renouvelée du décisionisme militant

In the present thesis, we attempt to examine the meta-ontological problematics of Alain Badiou and situate his speculative metaphysics in the overall cultural milieu of contemporary philosophy. As an introductory survey to the main objective, we first present his earlier works up to and including Theory of the Subject (1982), in order to establish lines of continuity, as well as breaks in the effectuated subjects, resources, and conceptual structures (chapter 1). Badiou’s main endeavour can be seen as an attempt at bridging the gap between certain varieties of structuralism and Sartrean existentialism through maintaining a close relationship with mathematical formalism. In the next couple of chapters, we turn towards his mature philosophical programme, as it can be seen to unfold in Being and Event (1988) and a series of other texts, mainly situated in the decade between his little book Can Politics Be Thought? (1985) and the collection gathered together under the title A Short Treatise on Transitory Ontology (1998). Working our way through these texts, we proceed through a conceptual reconstruction of his famous equation of ontology with/to mathematics (and, more specifically, with the ZFC axiomatic version of Set-Theory) and the related “meta-ontological” commentary on this equation, which produces the concepts and operations of presentation, situation, structure, the void, subtraction, the count-as-one, on the one hand, and those of re-presentation, state of the situation, meta-structure, and the forming-into-one, on the other. Additionally, we examine the philosophical disputes over the proper conception of Nature and Infinity, disputes which are both resolved in a novel manner in the context of the aforementioned positing of a set-theoretic ontology as a condition of philosophy (chapter 2). Furthermore, we traverse the tripartite conceptual territory of the event, the subject, and truth which stands in a relation of internal exclusion with respect to being-as being. Briefly put, an event is an instantaneous eruption of “noise” with respect to a specifically structured situation; it takes place as an irruption that suspends the latter’s ordinary functioning and exposes momentarily its void, that is, the radical contingency of its institution, constitution, and consistency, i.e. of the fact that, no matter how complex or nuanced, a fixed symbolic structure cannot exhaust the abundance of the real. A truth is the infinite unfolding of the consequences of a particular event inside the situation for which it was an event; it is a process of radical yet “slow” or “long” transformation that establishes its own time. A subject is a finite instance of a truth, the juncture between the apparition of an event and the post-evental construction of its intra-situational effects as a truth procedure. A subject can be individual or collective. It involves the “seizing” of certain “human animals” by something that exceeds them, and that induces their action in the direction of constructing experimental protocols of existence. Both the appearance of a truth and the formation of its subject constitute the necessary formal characteristics of a (post-)evental sequence which can be distributed in the four possible types (the mathème, the poem, politics, and love) of such “generic” or truth procedures. A particular event is (what will retroactively come to be seen as) the trigger, a subject that decides its belonging in/to the situation and works through its consequences is the “motor” or “propeller”, and a truth is the projected outcome, assuming that the procedure will have been accomplished, and the generic multiple that it is will have been added to the initial situation, thus modifying it, along with its encyclopedic disposition of “knowledges” and its regulated circulation of names and referents. The actual possibility of an event, qua an unfounded reflexive multiple, is prohibited by Set Theory, and the possible forms of truths and of subjects, while not ontological in their being, can be thought ontologically precisely thanks to the concept of a generic (non-constructible, indiscernible) subset and the technique of “forcing” (along with the Axiom of Choice) respectively, both of which Badiou borrows and utilizes from the work of American mathematician Paul Cohen on the independence of the Continuum Hypothesis (chapter 3). The following two chapters explore the amendments that Badiou was forced to make as he was working through some of the aporias of his system, as well as responding to earlier criticisms. In order to cope with the richness and complexity of empirical and phenomenal experience, Badiou elaborates, in Logics of Worlds (2006), a differential logic of appearing that reinvigorates his theory of the event as well as some neglected aspects of his theory of subject-formation from Theory of the Subject. The main problem concerns the thinking of relationality within a given world, as well as the plurality of different worlds, each impregnated with its own transcendental structure, i.e. the internal logic of ordering differences and regulating intensities, or the structure responsible for its functional reproduction. Badiou thus endorses a non-Kantian, desubjectified notion of the transcendental regime as the structuring logic of a field. The event is now conceived as an “in-existent” part of a world that comes to appear maximally through a process of subjective form-ing, and a truth will come to pass through the formation of precisely such a “worldly” subjective body. In The Immanence of Truths (2018), the third volume of his Being and Event saga, Alain Badiou will reorient his metaphysical endeavour towards the complex dialectics between infinities of different size and its finite products, distinguishing between “work”, “archive”, and “waste product”, each according to the transformative potential it envelopes and its correlative resistance or lack thereof to operations of assimilation. The work is capable of such resistance to integration in already existing linguistic and cognitive resources (cultural encodings and codifications premised on the established order of reasons), being marked by an index of absoluteness, akin to an infinitized finite part. The urgency of this rejuvenated philosophical recourse to the Absolute marks a constant tendency in Badiou’s mature work against two contrarian tendencies, i.e. what has been called, since Theory of the Subject (1982), “right” and “left deviations” of/from the materialist dialectic, or, more recently, “democratic materialism” and “speculative leftism” respectively (relativism and scepticism on the one hand, dogmatism and mysticism on the other). Badiou’s central position on the matter is that access to the absolute is possible to each and everyone under certain circumstances, yet such access consists always in the adventurous sequences put forward by an event’s occurrence in the fields of science, art, politics, and love, i.e., it takes place through mediations by particular plural and non-communicating instances, so that there is no Urereignis of all events akin to a self-revelation or disclosure of the Absolute in and through itself. The mathematical resources that Badiou puts to work in these books are the category-theoretical framework (and especially the Topos Theory that took inspiration from Alexander Grothendieck’s work) and the Hypotheses concerning the existence of Large Cardinals (that is, additional assumptions concerning “very large” infinite multiplicities that far exceed the current demonstrative knowledge of Set Theory, yet whose possible inclusion in or addition to the main set of axioms might turn out to be decisive in resolving as yet undecidable propositions). After the systematic reconstruction of the course that leads from the taking place of an event to the modification and re-organization of the initial situation is completed, we turn to the examination of philosophy’s role. Given that it has been deprived of ontology as its proper field of discourse, philosophy nevertheless maintains a duty of tremendous importance: It has to construct the conceptual space that will accommodate the truths of its time, which are produced in their respective domains, the four generic procedures. Furthermore, philosophy has as its role the perpetual affirmation and re-enactment of the identification of mathematics with/as ontological discourse proper, because of the constant tendency of working mathematicians to “forget” their ontological vocation and task. Finally, philosophy has to treat conceptually precisely what is foreclosed or precluded by the ontological discourse, i.e. “that-which-is-not-being-qua-being”, becoming therefore something akin to a general theory of the event. It should also try to avoid its unilateral suture or absorption into one of its generic conditions, that is, it must always be able to keep itself at a safe distance and to freely circulate between them. Articulated thus in a rather systematic manner, philosophy always runs the risk of slipping into the function of its structural dialectical doppelgängers, that is, of the twin conceptual figures of the sophist and the antiphilosopher respectively (chapter 6). This largely metaphilosophical reflection is completed in the next chapter by an extended focus on the placement of Badiou’s philosophical project in the cultural milieu of French theoretical production and the broader context of its reception in the English-speaking world. Thus all sorts of possible critiques are examined, principal among them being the arch-suspicion that Badiou does not deserve the name of the philosopher, since what he is actually interested in, we are told, is the intensive re-education of the intellectually curious youth via mathematics, and in strict accordance to pre-philosophical objectives of an ideologico-political nature. In the concluding chapter, we expand our scope to include the differend of Badiou’s thought to that of his philosophical nemesis, Gilles Deleuze. We shall attempt to address the issue concerning the rapport between their distinct philosophical endeavours, mainly by examining the key thesis of the monograph that the first devoted to the latter (The Clamor of Being). In that work, as well as in other texts throughout the last decades, Badiou infamously presented a reading of Deleuzian metaphysics as the most brilliant –but no less doomed to fail– contemporary effort to create a coherent, systematic, and renewed metaphysics of the One in a (neo)platonic fashion. In the course of the present reconstruction of this bizarre interpretation, further issues, problems, and possibilities concerning the “cartography” of the (non-)relation between these two thinkers will come to light. Our version of Differenzschrift is structured around the disjunctive synthesis of Badiou’s neorationalist metaphysics and Deleuze’s “neovitalist” or “neomaterialist” ontology (a “Platonism of the Multiple” or “Vitalism of the Virtual”), both of which are sensitive to the relation and the productive tensions between the infinite and the finite, i.e. morphogenesis, novelty, individuation, and the relation of thought, conceived as inventive configuration or concept-construction, to Being. An important and rather extended part of the final chapter will therefore concern not only their actual or virtual commonalities or the conflictual aspects of their respective ontologies and metaphilosophical commitments in a comparative approach but the preparational work for a much needed, albeit somewhat idiosyncratic on our behalf, reconstruction of the latter’s Naturphilosophie (which is to be taken elsewhere). In the “Conclusions” or “Afterword” section, we attempt to follow superficially in a recapitulative manner the evolution of Badiou’s thought, as it is manifested in the Being and Event saga. Then, we locate some points of possible confusion that, according to our understanding, could be further clarified due to their openness to different interpretative strategies and alternative hypotheses. We also examine in brief a few critiques addressed at Badiou, as well as some conflicting interpretations of his work. Last but not least, we locate as possible points of departure for an in-depth critique of (or differentiation from) his thought two –or rather, three– of its central assumptions: The belief –in terms of certainty and absolute affirmation– that events do happen (with its correlative investment in the existence of non-constructible infinities and its decisionistic ramifications), its underlying, quasi-Parmenidean “panlogicism” or “intellectualism”, and, as a consequence of the latter, a certain flavour of anthropocentrism or even “noocentrism” that accompanies it.Ο Alain Badiou είναι κατά πάσα πιθανότητα ο γνωστότερος εν ζωή Γάλλος φιλόσοφος, αρκετά αγαπητός και στη χώρα μας λόγω των πολιτικών παρεμβάσεων, των συχνών επισκέψεών του και των ουκ ολίγων μεταφρασμένων έργων του. Μάλλον όμως είναι λιγότερο γνωστό το αρχιτεκτονημένο σύστημα που υποβαστάζει τις επιμέρους επεξεργασίες των μικρότερης έκτασης έργων. Πρόκειται για την τριλογία τού Είναι και συμβάν, η οποία αποτελεί το κυρίως αντικείμενο πραγμάτευσης της διατριβής μας. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο προβαίνουμε σε μια επισκόπηση των πρώιμων γραπτών τού φιλοσόφου, ούτως ώστε να προλειανθεί το έδαφος για την κριτική προσέγγιση του συστήματος. Από τα εν λόγω κείμενα δεν απουσιάζουν οι συνάφειες με τους κατοπινούς προβληματισμούς ή ακόμη η προεικόνισή τους, εντούτοις η αξιωματική τής σκέψης τού φιλοσόφου παραμένει εμφανώς προσδεδεμένη σʼ έναν κατά περίσταση αλτουσεριανό, μαοϊκό ή λακανικό προσανατολισμό. Θα μπορούσε να γίνει λόγος για «τον Badiou πριν από τον Badiou». Έτσι, σκιαγραφείται η εξέλιξη του στοχασμού του από τα πρώιμα κείμενά του μέχρι τη δημοσίευση του πρώτου μείζονος έργου, της Θεωρίας του υποκειμένου. Διαφαίνεται η μέριμνα του Badiou να προσδιορίσει τη λογική τής εννοιολογικής καινοτομίας, εκκινώντας από το εσωτερικό τής γαλλικής επιστημολογικής παράδοσης. Πρόκειται για κείμενα που καταλαμβάνουν ένα δεκαπενταετές χρονικό διάστημα και μαρτυρούν τη μετάβαση του φιλοσόφου από μια ευρύτερη αλτουσεριανή ορθοδοξία προς μια πρώτη απόπειρα σύλληψης της διαλεκτικής μεταξύ της υφιστάμενης διάρθρωσης ενός πεδίου και της δυνατότητας μιας μετασχηματιστικής παρέμβασης για τη σκοποθετούμενη μεταβολή τής εσωτερικής λογικής που διέπει την οργάνωσή του. Ήδη με το πέρας της νεανικής φάσης, διακρίνονται ανάγλυφα οι δύο πόλοι ή άξονες, πέριξ των οποίων αρθρώνεται το σύστημα: Αφενός, αυτός της απρόσωπης επινοητικότητας και εμμενούς ορθολογικότητας των μαθηματικών, και αφετέρου εκείνος των προδιαγραφών μιας ακτιβιστικής, «μεταμεταφυσικής» σύλληψης της υποκειμενικής παρέμβασης. Τούτων λεχθέντων, εξακολουθεί να ισχύει ότι στα υπό εξέταση έργα τής περιόδου ίσαμε το 1980 δεσπόζουν οι –ενίοτε ευρισκόμενες σε στενή συνύφανση– επιστημολογικές και πολιτικές μέριμνες, με τη φιλοσοφική προβληματοθεσία να υφίσταται ένα είδος συρραφής σ’ αυτές. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο, εξετάζεται η «ώριμη» φάση τού Badiou, η οποία εγκαινιάζεται με τη δημοσίευση του πρώτου, ομότιτλου τόμου τής τριλογίας τού Είναι και συμβάν. Στεκόμαστε ειδικότερα στην κομβική θέση περί της ανάληψης του ρόλου τής οντολογίας από τα μαθηματικά, και συγκεκριμένα από την αξιωματική θεωρία συνόλων, τις προϋποθέσεις και τις προεκτάσεις της, τους λόγους για τους οποίους ο φιλόσοφος οδηγήθηκε σ’ αυτήν, καθώς και στον τρόπο με τον οποίο, υπό την οπτική τού ενστερνισμού της, αναμορφώνεται ο στοχασμός για πλήθος παραδοσιακών μεταφυσικών ζητημάτων, όπως είναι εκείνα του ενός και των πολλών, του όλου και των μερών, του διακριτού και του συνεχούς, του πεπερασμένου και του απείρου, καθώς και η σύστοιχη σύλληψη της φύσεως, του είναι και του γίγνεσθαι, της ταυτότητας και της διαφοράς, κτλ. Συμπερασματικά, μπορούμε να ισχυριστούμε ότι ο Badiou προτείνει την εν λόγω εξίσωση χάρη στα ενδοφιλοσοφικά αποτελέσματα, τα οποία φαίνεται να εγγυάται ή να υπόσχεται, σε σχέση με τον στοχασμό τού πολλαπλού ως αμιγούς, δίχως έννοια –σε ρήξη επομένως με την ιδέα τού Ενός– και ως απείρου –σε ρήξη επομένως με την ιδέα ενός περιεκτικού Όλου–, τον οποίο εκτιμά πως απαιτούν οι καιροί. Άλλως ειπείν, η ZFC αποτελεί το ιστορικά βέλτιστο, προσφορότερο οντολογικό μοντέλο με τις ελάχιστες δυνατές προϋποθέσεις. Συνεχίζοντας την εξέταση των επεξεργασιών τής «ώριμης περιόδου» και συγκεκριμένα της αρχικής φάσης της, η οποία καλύπτει το χρονικό διάστημα μέχρι τα μέσα τής δεκαετίας τού ʼ90, στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο στρέψαμε την προσοχή μας προς ό,τι δεν μπορεί να αφομοιωθεί δίχως εντάσεις σε/από την αξιωματική τής οντολογικής επικράτειας, ήτοι στο εννοιακό τρίπτυχο του συμβάντος, της αλήθειας και του υποκειμένου. Η εν λόγω εξέταση ανέδειξε τόσο την οφειλή τού Badiou και τη συγγένειά του προς τις εκδοχές τής στρατευμένης θεωρίας της απόφασης (δηλ. εκείνες που είναι βουλησιαρχικού, ντεσιζιονιστικού ή/και υπαρξιστικού τύπου), όσο και τη συνάφεια των αναλύσεών του με προβλήματα που αφορούν τα εμμενή όρια και τις απορίες των συνολοθεωρητικών επεξεργασιών. Η θέση τού Badiou δεν είναι ότι οι μαθηματικές επεξεργασίες εγγυώνται κατά κάποιον τρόπο την ύπαρξη συμβάντων, αλλά ότι, άπαξ και τούτη η συμβαντική ρήτρα γίνει αποδεκτή, έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας ορθολογικά πρωτόκολλα για τον στοχασμό τής μορφολογίας και των συνεπειών της. Τα μαθηματικά διά της αρνητικής οδού υποδεικνύουν ότι όλοι οι διευθετημένοι κόσμοι είναι ενδεχομενικοί ως προς την οργάνωσή τους και έχουν όρια ως προς το τι μπορεί να νοηθεί εντός τους, και ότι, συνεπώς, ουδείς δύναται ν’ αποκλείσει την ανάβρυση συμβάντων, ακόμη και αν είναι εντελώς θεμιτό να ενστερνιστεί αυτή την απορριπτική στάση. Τα μαθηματικά στον Badiou δεν παρέχουν άλλοθι για την αντικατάσταση ή παράλειψη των καθαυτό φιλοσοφικών επιχειρημάτων, αλλά έμπνευση, προσανατολισμό και περιορισμούς ως προς τη διατύπωση των θεμιτών φιλοσοφικών θέσεων. Ούτως, το κυρίως έδαφος έχει διαμορφωθεί και η συστηματική αρχιτεκτονική τού μπαντιουϊκού εγχειρήματος αρθρώνεται ευδιάκριτα γύρω από το πρόβλημα της μετασχηματιστικής διέλευσης του καινοφανούς εντός μιας προϋπάρχουσας κατάστασης διαμέσου της ανάληψης επινοητικής δράσης. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο, διερευνήσαμε πώς, κατά τα έτη που ακολούθησαν, οι κριτικές που στράφηκαν προς τις «μεταοντολογικές» αναπτύξεις τού πρώτου τόμου, ώθησαν τον φιλόσοφο στη συστηματική εκ νέου πραγμάτευση των ίδιων θεμάτων υπό το φως τού προβλήματος της πληθυντικής ύπαρξης των κόσμων. Άλλως ειπείν, εάν η αφηρημένη ή μάλλον αφαιρετική προσέγγιση του Είναι και συμβάν αρκούσε για να παράσχει ένα γενικό και λίαν επεξεργασμένο σχήμα, έμενε εντούτοις μετέωρο το βήμα προς την εφαρμογή ή ενεργοποίηση του σχήματος αυτού αναφορικά με τις διαφορετικές υπαρκτές καταστάσεις, η πολυμορφία, ο πλούτος και η απαραμείωτη πολυπλοκότητα (του «οντικού», «εμπειρικού» ή «φαινομενολογικά πυκνού» χαρακτήρα) των οποίων απαιτούσαν τη μετάβαση σ’ ένα άλλο επίπεδο πραγμάτευσης. Ως εκ τούτου, στον δεύτερο τόμο, ο οποίος φέρει τον τίτλο Λογικές των κόσμων (2006), ο Badiou επεξεργάστηκε μια συστηματική λογική τού φαίνεσθαι ή του υπάρχειν σʼ έναν κόσμο. Στηριζόμενος στους πόρους τής θεωρίας κατηγοριών, θα προτείνει μία αντικειμενότροπη φαινομενολογία η οποία λαμβάνει υπόψη της τον απαράκαμπτο χαρακτήρα των σχέσεων και τις πληθυντικές λογικές που ρυθμίζουν τη συνεκτικότητα των διαφόρων πεδίων. Η τελεσφόρα συναρμογή τής εν λόγω φαινομενολογίας με το οντολογικό υπόβαθρο των πολλαπλοτήτων αποτελεί το στρατηγικά κρισιμότερο σημείο τού δεύτερου τόμου – και πιθανότατα το πλέον στριφνό: λαμβάνει τον χαρακτήρα ενός υλιστικού αιτήματος για την αναδρομική έδραση του φαίνεσθαι στο είναι (ένα είδος υπερβατολογικού ρεαλισμού). Αν το πρόβλημα της οικουμενικότητας των αληθειών και εκείνο της ενικότητάς τους αντίστοιχα ήταν αυτά που είχαν καθοδηγήσει τις αναλύσεις των δύο πρώτων τόμων, τότε ήταν το πρόβλημα της εμμενούς απολυτότητας των αληθειών εκείνο πέριξ του οποίου αρθρώθηκε η προβληματική τού τρίτου τόμου, ο οποίος αποτέλεσε προϊόν επεξεργασίας την επόμενη δωδεκαετία. Έτι περαιτέρω απ’ όσο στα προγενέστερα έργα του, βλέπουμε σ’ αυτό το κείμενο τον Badiou να εστιάζει στη διαλεκτική τού πεπερασμένου και του απείρου, προκειμένου να αναδείξει την κρίσιμη διαφοροποίηση μεταξύ του δυνάμενου να κατασκευαστεί από τον περατοκρατικό αλγόριθμο αρχείου και του επιτυχώς ανθιστάμενου σε μια τέτοιου τύπου υπαγωγή έργου. Η διερεύνηση της τυπολογίας τού απείρου οδηγεί στη σταδιακή και συνάμα ανέφικτη (άνευ διαμεσολάβησης) προσέγγιση του απολύτου, τη φιλοσοφική επικαιρότητα του οποίου εμφανώς υποστηρίζει ο Badiou. Δίχως αμφιβολία, η Εμμένεια των αληθειών περατώνει την αρχιτεκτονική διάταξη του μπαντιουϊκού συστήματος και αποτυπώνει περισσότερο ανάγλυφα τις στοχεύσεις και τη διακύβευσή του, επανεγγράφοντάς τες μάλιστα σ’ ένα λεξιλόγιο εμπνευσμένο όχι μόνο από την παράδοση του Πλάτωνα, αλλά και από εκείνη του Baruch Spinoza. Οδηγητικός μίτος τού εγχειρήματός του παραμένει η επένδυση στο αναφομοίωτο των δυνατοτήτων έναντι κάθε απόπειρας πλήρους και οριστικής (ακόμη και εκ των υστέρων) καθίζησης και περιστολής τους στο επίπεδο των θετικά αρθρωμένων γνώσεων (των κωδικοποιήσιμων από την εγκυκλοπαίδεια τεμαχίων πληροφορίας και των κανόνων σύνδεσής τους με εμπειρικά ανάφορα). Στο έργο τού φιλοσόφου, τον τελευταίο λόγο έχει η εμμενής απολυτότητα των αληθειών ως –διαρκής, καίτοι σπάνια– δυνατότητα αποτύπωσης ενός ίχνους αιωνιότητας στην παροντική αυτοαναφορικότητα του «ανθρώπινου ζώου». Η (προφανώς φιλοσοφική) δικαιολόγηση της ύπαρξης του άτυπου «δεύτερου μέρους» τής διατριβής αφορά το γεγονός ότι κάθε συγκεκριμένη φιλοσοφική πραγμάτευση, οσοδήποτε συστηματική ή σύγχρονη και αν φιλοδοξεί να είναι, διαμεσολαβείται εκ των πραγμάτων από την εννοιακή κοίτη μιας ευρύτερης παράδοσης, ήτοι τις κληρονομημένες έννοιες, δομές σκέψης και
