Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2023This project explores how Vietnamese Americans across the political spectrum manipulated and subverted narratives surrounding displaced people before, during, and after the Vietnam War. In doing so, I argue, they advanced their own anticolonial agendas to contest dominant notions of race, war, and empire in both the United States and Vietnam. The dissertation consists of three parts, each of which covers a political movement in the United States spearheaded by Vietnamese nationalists. The first part disrupts the typical timeline of Vietnamese American history by tracking the rise of a left-wing Vietnamese political tradition in the United States from 1945 to 1975.
