Obesity is one of the main public health concerns worldwide. White adipose tissue (WAT) is an endocrine organ that stores energy excess as triglycerides. Increased adiposity, mainly visceral WAT, is strongly associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, among others. In contrast to WAT, brown adipose tissue (BAT) has the ability to dissipate energy in the form of heat due to the presence of the uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1), a key determinant of mitochondrial thermogenesis.
