The Trip to the Communes. The Quest for an Alternative to the Family in the Spain of «Desarrollismo» (1965-1975)

The article seeks to explain why, at the end of the 1960s, a sector of the Spanish youth tried to establish countercultural communes similar to those that had already been founded in other Western countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands. Various sources (fanzines, press, scientific literature of the time, interviews, and secondary bibliography) are examined in order to understand the ways in which these practices entered the Spain of «Desarrollismo», as well as the reasons that led their protagonists to diagnose that there was a disorder in the world that could be solved through community life. It is concluded that the communes were presented as an alternative to the family in a context in which this was considered to be the social institution that played the most decisive role in determining the behavior of individuals. The communards were convinced that, by finding an alternative to the family, they would be able to initiate the construction of new social relations that would be in harmony with human nature.El artículo intenta explicar por qué, a finales de la década de 1960, una parte de la juventud española trató de poner en marcha comunas contraculturales similares a las que ya habían sido fundadas en otros países del entorno occidental, como los Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido, Alemania o los Países Bajos. Se examinan diversas fuentes (fanzines, prensa, literatura científica de la época, entrevistas y bibliografía secundaria) para entender las vías a través de las cuales penetraron estas prácticas en la España desarrollista, así como las razones que llevaron a sus protagonistas a diagnosticar que existía un desorden en el mundo que podía ser resuelto mediante la vida en comunidad. Así, se llega a la conclusión de que las comunas se presentaron como una alternativa a la familia en un contexto en que esta era considerada como la institución social que desempeñaba la función más decisiva a la hora de determinar la conducta de los individuos. Por ello, los comuneros se mostraban convencidos de que, encontrando una alternativa a la familia, serían capaces de iniciar la construcción de unas nuevas relaciones sociales más armoniosas y acordes a la naturaleza humana
