This article analyses the second aspect of this tension, the textual process linked to interpretation, with reference to chapters 16 and 17 of the First Book of Samuel in the Old Testament. These chapters frequently display incoherence without ceasing to produce the effect of a text. How does the reader think the text not in spite of these contradictions but with them?
