The Forgotten History of the Lai River is a unique account of the Manchu conquest of Southern China. Written in a very personal style by a supporter of the loyalist resistance by the name of Zhou Tingying, the narrative focuses on the rebellion of the ‘Sliced noses’ bondservant society. From June to December of 1645, its leaders, the Pan brothers, literally put the district of Liyang (Jiangsu, south of the Yangzi River) to fire and sword.
