De l'exploitation rurale du 19e siècle à l'exploitation agricole multifonctionnelle du 21e siècle

National audienceFrom rural agriculture of the 19th to the multifunctional agriculture of the 21st century This paper shows that the multifunctionality of agriculture, which nowadays appears as an agricultural policy issue, has a historical background. The latter stems in particular from the role that was assigned to the small family farm by the French Revolution. Its role consisted in contributing to the organization of the society and of its territory, quite apart from producing food. As before, its role remains the production of agricultural goods, but today it also includes the management of private and common resources in the framework of activities that keep interfering with those of the urban society.Cette communication montre que la multifonctionnalité de l'exploitation agricole, dont la reconnaissance est, aujourd'hui, une question de politique agricole, repose sur des fondements historiques. Elle trouve notamment ses racines dans le rôle dédié à la petite exploitation rurale par la Révolution française; on demande à cette exploitation de contribuer à l’organisation d'une société et de son territoire, tout en assurant la production d’aliments. Aujourd’hui, comme hier il s’agit de produire des biens agricoles, tout en gérant des ressources, privées et communes, dans le cadre d‘activités interférant en permanence avec celles de la société urbaine
