International audienceThis article reviews the transformations in the academic profession in France since the 1990s, highlighting an enduring structural tension: while, historically, this group developed around the ideal of an egalitarian community with uniform rules at national level, it has become increasingly fragmented over the last 30 years. New divisions have developed between and within disciplines, working environments have become increasingly differentiated at the individual level, and a new stratification of positions of power has emerged within the profession.
