Archaeological museography in Bahrain : to centralize or not ?

International audienceIn Bahrain, awareness of its strong heritage roots dates back to the 1950s, when the Danish Expedition from Moesgård locally revealed the civilization of Dilmun in its most concrete architectural or material features. Shortly after this, a National Museum was first established in Muharraq, mainly to house the archaeological collections that had been recently gathered. In 1988 these collections were relocated in a large contemporary complex designed specifically for this purpose. The current Bahrain National Museum remains today one of the major museum institutions of the Arabian Peninsula promoting, not only archaeology but also the popular heritage of the country and the works of local contemporary artists. The creation in 2009 of a autonomous Ministry of Culture – later changed into the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in 2015– led by a energetic shaykha and a member of the ruling family who is a historian by training, has accelerated the definition and development of a systematic programme of archaeological site museums. These include a museum at Qal’at al-Bahrain, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.Beyond evoking these ambitious projects, we attempt to show how, in this Gulf state characterized by limited possibilities to extend its territory, the justification of such a museum programme could led to a crucial redefinition of the idea that it is indeed a “National Museum”.Au royaume du Bahreïn, la conscience de racines patrimoniales fortes remonte aux années 1950, lorsque l'expédition danoise de Moesgård révéla localement la civilisation de Dilmun dans ses caractéristiques architecturales ou matérielles les plus concrètes. Peu de temps après, un musée national fut d'abord créé à Muharraq, principalement pour abriter les collections archéologiques qui avaient été récemment rassemblées. En 1988, ces collections furent déplacées dans un grand bâtiment conçu spécialement à cet effet. L'actuel Musée National de Bahreïn demeure aujourd'hui l'une des principales institutions muséales de la péninsule arabique qui promeut non seulement l'archéologie mais aussi le patrimoine populaire du pays et les artistes contemporains locaux. La création en 2009 d'un ministère autonome de la Culture - plus tard transformé en Autorité de Bahreïn pour la Culture et les Antiquités en 2015 - dirigé par une shaykha énergique, membre de la famille régnante et historienne de formation, a accéléré la définition et le développement d’un programme systématique de musées de sites archéologiques. Celui-ci inclut un musée à Qal’at al-Bahreïn, site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 2005. Outre l’évocation de ces projets ambitieux, nous tentons ici de montrer comment, dans cet État du Golfe caractérisé par des possibilités limitées d'extension de son territoire, la justification d'un tel programme muséal pourrait conduire à une redéfinition cruciale de l'idée même de «musée national»
