Les paysages du Nefzaoua , une interaction entre l'eau, le vent et les hommes.

The oasis landscapes of the Nefzaoua (southern Tunisia) have been structured at least since antiquity around artesian springs. They emerged in a circular geomorphologic formation that could reach several hundred meters in diameter and a few tens of meters in height called mound. These mounds of springs consist of a ring of sedimentary material redistributed by the artesian waters and especially of aeolian material trapped by the vegetation growing around the springs. Populations settled down thanks to these mounds and developed a three-stories oasis agriculture. With the recent development of deep drilling and the multiplication of individual boreholes, the landscape has now been completely changed: the oases are reorganized, and the mounds are being destroyed. This destruction shows the transformation stages of the oasis landscape: a dramatic evolution towards a system that is certainly productive, but with long-term limitations. Water resources that are hardly renewable from the "fossil" water table are drying up and decreasing in quality (salinity increasing sharply). The transition from the old to the new landscape system, as well as the intermediate transformations, are analyzed through the sedimentological study of the remaining mounds, old topographic maps and satellite imagery at several dates. Our work should raise awareness among decision-makers to define the conditions necessary to safeguard at least one relic of this natural heritage, as they are essential but fragile witnesses of the hydro-agricultural landscape history of the Nefzaoua oases.Les paysages oasiens du Nefzaoua (sud de la Tunisie) se sont structurés au moins depuis l'Antiquité autour de sources artésiennes. Elles émergeaient dans une formation géomorphologique circulaire pouvant atteindre plusieurs centaines de mètres de diamètre et quelques dizaines de mètres de hauteur qu’on appelle tertre. Ces tertres sont constitués d’une ceinture de matériel sédimentaire redistribué par les eaux artésiennes et surtout de matériel éolien piégé par la végétation poussant autour des sources. Les populations se sont sédentarisées grâce à ces tertres et y ont développé une agriculture oasienne à trois étages. Avec le développement récent des forages profonds et la multiplication des forages individuels, le paysage est aujourd'hui complètement changé : les oasis sont réorganisées et les tertres subissent des destructions. Cette destruction montre les étapes de transformation du paysage oasien : une évolution dramatique vers un système certes productif, mais avec des limitations à long terme. Les ressources en eau peu renouvelables à partir de la nappe « fossile » se tarissent et baissent en qualité (salinité en forte augmentation). La transition de l'ancien au nouveau système paysager, ainsi que les transformations intermédiaires, sont analysées à travers l'étude sédimentologique des tertres restants, d'anciennes cartes topographiques et des images satellites à plusieurs dates. Notre travail devrait permettre de sensibiliser les décideurs pour définir des conditions nécessaires à la sauvegarde d’au moins une relique de ce patrimoine naturel, car ils sont des témoins essentiels mais fragiles de l'histoire des paysages hydro-agricoles des oasis du Nefzaoua
