This book proposes a social history of several modern professions in a few Arab Middle Eastern countries (Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan), from the end of the ottoman empire to the recent changes that resulted from liberalisation policies. The evolution of the position of engineers, doctors, technicians, accountants, their role in social change, their relation to the state, their professional associations, are studied in relation to social and economic policies, as well as popular or learned representations. The concepts of "elite", "middle class", or "civil society" used in academic discourse, are discussed and their relevance reevaluated according to the changing contexts of recent history.Ce livre propose une socio-histoire de quelques pr...
