L'événement Mai 68 : pour une sociohistoire du temps court

The crisis of May-June 1968 in France has been variously interpreted, but many analyses tend to focus upon its alleged causes or consequences. In contrast with this doubly evasive approach overshadowing the event itself, we aim to revert to the ?conjunctural'dimension of the crisis and its most puzzling aspect: the synchronization of students'and workers'mobilizations. Achievements in the fields of historiography, social sciences and the sociology of political crises, induce us to re-examine the weight of the logic of situations behind phases of radicalisation, and the effects of an unstable and uncertain context on the actors involved in the uprising. The fact remains that the event cannot be abstracted from its historical background and that the current state of a crisis may also be viewed ? to some extent ? as re-activation of the past. A sociohistorical account of short-term crises is therefore designed to help construe ? and conceive as forming a united whole ? the history of events and the history of structures. The synchronization of mobilizations as well as the political normalisation then appear to be the complex ? actual though unnecessary ? outcome of a multilayered interplay between political lability and previous structural changes, and of intermingled national and local intrigues.[ http://www.cairn.info/revue-annales-2008-2-p-321.htm ] La crise de mai-juin 1968 en France a fait l'objet de multiples interprétations qui tendent à en privilégier les conséquences supposées ou les origines. Contre ce double évitement de l'événement, il convient de revenir à la conjoncture elle-même et à ce qui en constitue l'énigme : la désectorisation et la synchronisation des mobilisations, notamment étudiantes et ouvrières. Les acquis de l'historiographie, des sciences sociales et de la sociologie des crises politiques invitent à reconsidérer le poids des logiques de situation dans les phénomènes de radicalisation et les effets qu'exerce un contexte instable et incertain sur les acteurs mobilisés. Il reste que l'événement n'est pas arraché à l'histoire et que le présent de la crise est aussi fait de réemplois du passé. Aussi une sociohistoire du temps court a-t-elle vocation à penser ensemble histoire événementielle et histoire structurelle. La désectorisation puis la normalisation du jeu politique apparaissent dès lors comme le produit complexe, advenu mais non nécessaire, de jeux d'échelle multiples liant propriétés de la fluidité politique et mutations antérieures, intrigue nationale et intrigues locales
