Faire famille après le décès d'un.e enfant. Une sociologie du deuil

This thesis examines how members of a bereaved family continue to form a family in the context of the death of a child. The framework chosen is that of families who have lost a child aged between 12 and 25 years. This study is based on qualitative material, i.e. 40 interviews with parents and siblings who have lost a child or a sibling aged between 12 and 25. Based on this material, the aim is to question the tools and concepts that sociology possesses today to carry out an analysis of bereavement within the family. By focusing on individual and family trajectories as well as the turning points induced by bereavement, this thesis shows that, far from being an individual and psychological task, grieving a child constitutes above all a status that affects parenthood over time. This thesis begins with an exploration of the links between the sociology of bereavement and the contemporary sociology of family. By defining the family as an emotional configuration and by placing the roles of parents and siblings at the centre of the analysis, this doctoral work shows how emotions circulate within the family, making it possible to be a family despite an absent member. The transformation of parental roles is questioned, and in particular the way in which bereaved parents are now part of a liminal form of parenthood. Through the elaboration of the notion of the emotional labour of grief, this thesis highlights the inequalities between fatherhood and motherhood in situations of bereavement, particularly in relation to the place within the professional sphere. By following the family through its material components, this work shows how material elements anchor absence within a shared daily life. Finally, a long-term analysis of bereavement leads us to question the future of bereaved siblings, but also the transformation of the family, for example through the arrival of grandchildren.Ce travail de thèse porte sur la manière dont les membres d’une famille endeuillée continuent de faire famille dans le contexte du décès d’un·e enfant. Le cadre choisi est celui des familles ayant perdu un·e enfant âgé·e de 12 à 25 ans. Ce travail s’appuie sur des matériaux qualitatifs, soit 40 entretiens réalisés avec des parents, mais aussi des frères et sœurs endeuillé·e·s d’un·e enfant, d’une sœur ou d’un frère âgé·e de 12 à 25 ans. À partir de ces matériaux, il s’agit de questionner les outils et concepts que possède aujourd’hui la sociologie pour mener à bien une analyse du deuil au sein de la famille. En s’intéressant aux trajectoires individuelles et familiales et aux bifurcations induites par le deuil, ce travail de thèse expose que, loin de pouvoir se résumer à un travail individuel et psychologique, le deuil d’un·e enfant constitue surtout un statut qui affecte la parentalité sur le temps long. Cette thèse commence par décrire comment la sociologie du deuil s’articule aujourd’hui à la sociologie de la famille. En définissant la famille comme configuration émotionnelle et en mettant au centre de l’analyse le rôle des parents et des frères et sœurs, ce travail doctoral montre comment les émotions circulent au sein de la famille, et permettent de faire famille malgré un membre absent. La transformation des rôles parentaux est interrogée, et notamment la manière dont les parents endeuillé·e·s s’inscrivent désormais dans une forme liminale de parentalité. Grâce à l’élaboration de la notion de travail émotionnel de deuil, cette thèse met en lumière les inégalités entre paternité et maternité en deuil, particulièrement par rapport à l’inscription dans la sphère professionnelle. En suivant la famille à travers ses indices matériels, ce travail montre en outre comment les éléments matériels ancrent l’absence dans un quotidien partagé. Enfin, l’analyse sur le temps long amène à interroger le devenir des sœurs et frères en deuil, mais aussi la transformation de la famille, notamment à travers l’arrivée des petits-enfants
