Composantes culturelles et Premières productions céramiques du Bronze ancien dans le sud-est de la France: Résultats du Projet Collectif de Recherche 1999-2009

The collective research project "Cultural components of the first pottery productions of the Early Bronze Age in Southeast France" derives from renewal of documentation on the Early Bronze Age in the southeast Rhodanian region and new approaches to the Bell Beaker period, particularly in the southern part of Southeast France. In 1998, the Riva del Garda conference constituted a high point in Bell Beaker research at a European scale, of which the consequences and questions motivated the collective project for an overview of the transition from the end of the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age in a large southeastern quarter of France. In these regions, issues relating to the future of Bell Beaker cultures and the origin of the "Rhone civilization" and the Barbed-wire Beaker have most often been treated through examination of changes in the ceramics, metallurgical production more secondarily. Then, some cultural traits were examined locally in the aim of explaining these heritages between the Final Neolithic Bell Beaker and the Early Bronze Age, such as the symbolic foundations, architecture, the different forms of the subsistence economy and chronometry. Yet such research remained sporadic and showed a heterochrony in evolutionary dynamics for these different aspects. We have thus chosen to focus on ceramics for our analysis, which is by far the most abundant and of sufficiently broad geographic distribution to discriminate between the different cultural components playing a role in the establishment of Early Bronze Age productions along the Rhodanian axis, from the Alps to Auvergne and to the Mediterranean coast, between late manifestations of the Bell Beaker and the full Early Bronze Age, dated between ca. 2400 and 1800 BC. From the title, the term 'production' should be used in a restricted sense, no technological studies having been done, and those of the pottery concerning mainly recipients. A thematic separation was applied to isolate several descriptors for which analysis and combination of the different results enabled illustration of the geographic and cultural structures inferred during the first stages of the Early Bronze Age. The themes and research tools concern six fields: a chronometric overview provided by radiocarbon dates; morphological classification of recipients to differentiate the different cultural components involved in pottery making; detailed description of decorations made using the barbed wire technique and a classification of the different modes of execution based on the development of a specific descriptive terminology and a simple database; analysis of the decorative themes to identify the typological heritages from the Bell Beaker to the Early Bronze Age and finally, petrographic and microscopic analyses to cover the range of variability in ceramic containers. Another field considers the definition and place of the Rhodanian component. After a brief discussion of the initial research questions and a presentation of the regional chronocultural contexts, a summary of the radiocarbon dates helps to establish the temporal limits of the subject and the two phases of the Early Bronze Age considered, BzA1 and Early BzA2a (fig. 4). The morphological and typological analytic data set for the pottery contains two categories of intrinsic descriptors: metric values and indices, and morphological criteria. Each is presented as a graphic synthesis. Forty-seven ceramic types were identified from the inventory of 188 profiles and 146 fragments for which the state of preservation permitted classification to typological group and often to type (fig. 7-9). Frequencies for each type, site or microregion grouping the lowest counts are represented by seriation in a contingency table that clearly isolates the earliest southern and Rhodanian components at each end of the graph (fig. 10). The middle of the table contained series in intermediate position, both geographically and chronologically (Early BzA2a). Seven typological units (A-F) can be isolated in the contingency table, most often corresponding to different productions preferentially concentrated in a defined geographic area. Following a discussion of the state of extraregional chronocultural divisions, the contribution of the different areas of this broad framework of understanding can be identified. In a chronological and geographic overview, we then return to typological issues and chronocultural heritages. The first point relates to the difficulties in applying the concept of the Rhone civilization and its rejection in the Southeast. This may appear too narrow, considering the cultural relationships demonstrated supraregionally, which put into play a Danube-Rhine-Rhone axis during the first phases of the Early Bronze Age, or too broad if we refer to specific details of the economic bases or the very particular circulation sphere of the metallic attributes of power. This situation clearly shows the multiplicity of components involved in the establishment of the two main units, medio-Rhodanian and southern, of the Early Bronze Age (fig. 26-29). The zones of influence are located from Bavaria to the Middle Danube and from the Po Plain to central-southern and continental Italy. Diffusion vectors are principally north and south alpine in the middle Rhone Valley, south alpine and Mediterranean in coastal regions. Based on the ceramic data, this large-scale cultural dynamic appears to have an effect on the development of local substrates in the middle Rhone Valley. One can thus speak of an eastern-Rhodanian Early Bronze Age. In Provence, the Bell Beaker component persists for a time, during the BzA1, as shown by the survival into the Early Bronze Age of many decorative motifs and themes. The concept of Epi-Bell Beaker appears to maintain an operational value and we can keep the term Epi-Bell Beaker Early Bronze Age, with several post- or peri-Bell Beaker vectors of different geographic origins. Next, during the Early Bronze Age A2a, a northern impact is more marked, corresponding to a Rhodanian cultural transgression itself appearing somewhat more detached from eastern influxes. It is possible, on as yet provisional foundations, that the eastern Languedoc participated earlier in this Rhodanian circle of influence, spread via Auvergne and the southern margins of the Massif Central since the BzA1, with some eastern markers. Unique geographic characteristics have been noted, such as the pivotal role played by the Vaucluse/Drôme/Ardèche limit in the spread of southern components, especially barbed-wire pottery, from the eastern Languedoc region and Provence toward lower Auvergne. This axis seems to have benefited, or taken into account, the location of a different entity in the middle Rhone Valley that also had a strong identity. Conversely, but at a much more reduced scale, the uniqueness of productions result from attempts to combine different support forms, decorative themes and the different modalities of variables summarized in the kinds of barbed-wire pottery. Rules proper to each descriptive criterion lead to rare preferential combinations, which however, remain partial (fig. 46). Petrographic analyses are pertinent to both the origin of the clays used and the kinds of particles that are added as temper. The sample includes 651 units, 98 to complete the earlier Bell Beaker data set and 553 for pottery from the Early Bronze Age. Raw material procurement took place most often within a radius of seven kilometers and reflects opportunistic acquisition, which is supported by the values obtained from ethnographic research. The very high variability in the petrographic groups identified reflects productions that are entirely independent or nearly so, confirming observations made following unproductive attempts to identify recurrent typological combinations. The introduction of added temper based on rules varying by region, going from the continued use of grog in some zones (Vaunage, Rhodanian Vaucluse) to the exclusive use of carbonates in others, during the BzA1. During the Early BzA2a, the return to an earlier southern trait from the Final Neolithic is observed, with the widespread use of crushed carbonates in the pastes (fig. 176 and 178). A high degree of freedom of execution is thus imparted, corresponding to a structure of production that does not appear to go beyond domestic use. However, petrographic analyses clearly identify the circulation of some pottery or groups of recipients over distances ranging from a ten to sixty kilometers. The most important transfers take place in the middle Rhone Valley, from the right bank to the left of the river and to the base of the Pre-Alps. Such mobility of products and people also shows the spread of certain forms and decorations. It likely results from necessities linked to economic activities, discovery contexts in caves suggesting the possibility of the movement of relatively few individuals in the context of pastoral activities. Finally, the spatio-temporal structure and conditions for the establishment of cultures at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age can be addressed. During the BzA1, a north-south partition between Rhodanian and southern entities is paralleled in the Midi by the existence of a mosaic of different zones that appear to reflect Neolithic cultures in central Provence, prolong earlier traits in Vaunage or, toward the southwest, be receptive to the Rhodanian influence (fig. 190). During the Early BzA2a, the north-south distinction still exists, but at a lower hierarchical level within a single entity of Rhodanian origin. The different themes developed throughout our research ultimately lead to an adjustment of the title to better reflect the contributions of this work: Cultural components and initial pottery productions during the Early Bronze Age in Southeast France. In conclusion, different questions are raised, whether generalized or not, during the Early Bronze Age, regarding an advanced stage of agropastoral economy, a historical cultural Neolithic stage, the impact that the development of copper metallurgy could have had faced with certain socioeconomic needs for separation from bioclimatic and contextual constraints, or even the compatibility and articulation between two situations, developments under eastern and southern influxes and internal transformations of the economic foundations of power, questions that serve as points of departure for future research.Le projet collectif de recherche " Composantes culturelles des premières productions céramiques du Bronze ancien dans le Sud-Est de la France " tire son origine du renouvellement de la documentation sur le Bronze ancien du Sud-Est rhodanien et des nouvelles approches du Campaniforme, notamment dans le Sud-Est méridional. En 1998, le colloque de Riva del Garda a constitué un temps fort des travaux sur le Campaniforme à l'échelle de l'Europe, dont les retombées et les questionnements ont motivé le projet collectif d'un bilan sur la transition de la fin du Néolithique au Bronze ancien dans un large quart sud-est de la France. Dans ces régions, les questions touchant au devenir des cultures du Campaniforme, et à l'origine de la " civilisation du Rhône " et de l'épicampaniforme à céramique barbelée, ont le plus souvent été traitées sous l'angle de l'évolution des corpus céramiques, de la production métallurgique plus secondairement. Ensuite, certains traits culturels ont été mobilisés localement dans la perspective de comprendre ces héritages entre Néolithique final, Campaniforme et Bronze ancien, tels les fondements symboliques, l'architecture, les différentes formes de l'économie de subsistance, la chronométrie. Mais ces recherches restent ponctuelles et ont montré une hétérochronie des dynamiques évolutives de ces différents champs. Nous avons donc choisi de privilégier le document céramique pour notre analyse, qui est de loin le plus abondant et de répartition géographique suffisamment large, de manière à discriminer les différentes composantes culturelles participant à la mise en place des productions du Bronze ancien dans l'axe rhodanien, des Alpes à l'Auvergne et au littoral méditerranéen, entre les manifestations récentes du Campaniforme et le plein Bronze ancien, soit entre 2400 et 1800 av. J.-C. environ. De l'intitulé, le terme de production doit être pris dans un sens restrictif, aucune étude technologique n'ayant été menée, et celui de céramique concernant essentiellement les contenants. Un découpage thématique a été opéré de manière à isoler plusieurs descripteurs, dont l'analyse et le croisement des différents résultats devaient permettre d'illustrer les structures géographiques et culturelles induites durant les premiers stades du Bronze ancien. Ces thèmes et outils de recherche concernent six champs : un bilan chronométrique fourni par les datations radiocarbones ; un classement morphologique des récipients permettant de discriminer les différentes composantes culturelles intervenant dans la constitution des vaisseliers ; une description fine des décors de technique barbelée et un classement des différentes modalités d'exécution reposant sur la constitution d'un langage descriptif spécifique et d'une base de donnée simple ; une analyse des thématiques décoratives permettant d'identifier les héritages typologiques du Campaniforme au Bronze ancien, et enfin un gros effort d'analyse pétrographique et microscopique qui couvre la variabilité des récipients céramiques. Un autre champ considère la définition et la place de la composante rhodanienne. Après un bref état des questions de départ et un exposé des cadres chronoculturels régionaux, un bilan des dates radiocarbones permet de fixer les limites temporelles du sujet et des deux phases du Bronze ancien prises en compte, BzA1 et BzA2a ancien (fig. 4). La grille d'analyse morphologique et typologique des céramiques repose sur le recours à deux catégories de descripteurs intrinsèques : les valeurs et indices métriques, puis les critères morphologiques. Chacune est matérialisée sous une forme graphique et synthétique. Quarante-sept types céramiques ont été reconnus à partir de l'inventaire de 188 profils et de 146 fragments dont l'état de conservation permettait un classement au niveau du groupe typologique et souvent même du type (fig. 7 à 9). Les décomptes affectés à chaque type, pour chaque site ou microrégion regroupant les plus faibles effectifs, sont figurés par sériation dans un tableau de contingence qui permet de bien individualiser les composantes méridionale et rhodanienne les plus anciennes à chaque extrémité du graphe (fig. 10). Le centre du tableau est occupé par des séries qui se trouvent en position intermédiaire, aussi bien du point de vue géographique, que chronologique (BzA2a ancien). Sept blocs typologiques (A à F) peuvent être isolés sur le tableau de contingence, qui correspond le plus souvent à des productions discriminantes qui se concentrent préférentiellement dans un espace géographique défini. À l'issue d'un exposé de l'état des découpages chronoculturels extrarégionaux, la contribution des différentes aires de ce large cadre de compréhension peut être définie. Dans un bilan chronologique et géographique, nous revenons ensuite sur les ponts typologiques et les héritages chronoculturels. Un premier point concerne les difficultés d'application du concept de civilisation du Rhône et son rejet dans le Sud-Est. Celui-ci paraît soit trop étroit, compte tenu des relations culturelles mises en évidence au plan suprarégional, qui met en jeu un axe Danube-Rhin-Rhône dans les premières phases du Bronze ancien, soit trop large si l'on se réfère aux spécificités des bases économiques ou à la sphère de la circulation très particulière des attributs métalliques du pouvoir. Cette situation illustre bien la multiplicité des composantes qui participent à la mise en place des deux grandes entités, médio-rhodanienne et méridionale, du Bronze ancien (fig. 26 à 29). Les zones d'influences sont situées de la Bavière au moyen Danube et de la Plaine du Pô à l'Italie centro-méridionale et insulaire. Les vecteurs de diffusion sont principalement nord et sud alpins en moyenne vallée du Rhône, sud-alpins et méditerranéens sur les régions littorales. À partir du document céramique, cette dynamique culturelle à large échelle semble l'emporter sur une évolution à partir des substrats locaux en moyenne vallée du Rhône. On peut alors parler d'un Bronze ancien rhodano-oriental. En Provence, la composante campaniforme subsiste un temps, durant le BzA1, illustrée par la survivance au Bronze ancien de nombreux motifs et thèmes décoratifs. La notion d'épicampaniforme paraît conserver une valeur opératoire et l'on peut maintenir le vocable de Bronze ancien épicampaniforme, avec plusieurs vecteurs post ou péricampaniformes d'origines géographiques différentes. Ensuite, au Bronze A2a ancien, un impact septentrional est plus marqué, qui correspond à une transgression culturelle rhodanienne semblant alors elle-même un peu plus détachée des influx orientaux. Il est possible, sur des bases encore fragiles, que le Languedoc oriental participe plus tôt de cette mouvance rhodanienne, qui diffuse par l'Auvergne et les marges méridionales du Massif central dès le BzA1, avec quelques marqueurs orientaux. Des singularités géographiques ont été constatées, comme le rôle de pivot joué par la limite Vaucluse/Drôme/Ardèche dans la diffusion des composantes méridionales, à céramiques barbelées notamment, depuis le Languedoc oriental et la Provence, en direction de la basse Auvergne. Cet axe semble avoir profité, ou dû tenir compte, de la localisation en moyenne vallée du Rhône d'une entité différente, à forte identité également. À l'inverse, mais à une échelle bien plus réduite, la singularité des productions ressort des tentatives de croisement entre les formes supports, les thématiques décoratives et les différentes modalités des variables résumées dans les formules des poteries à ornementations barbelées. Les règles propres à chaque critère descriptif l'emportent sur les rares combinaisons préférentielles, qui restent cependant partielles (fig. 46). Les analyses pétrographiques concernent à la fois l'origine des terres façonnées et la nature des particules qui leurs sont adjointes. L'échantillonnage a porté sur 651 unités, 98 pour compléter le référentiel campaniforme antérieur et 553 pour les céramiques du Bronze ancien. La collecte de la matière première se fait le plus souvent dans un rayon de moins de sept kilomètres et correspond à un prélèvement opportuniste, ce qui vérifie les valeurs obtenues à partir de travaux ethnographiques. La très grande variabilité des groupes pétrographiques identifiés correspond à des productions très fortement, sinon totalement indépendantes, confirmant les observations opérées à l'issue des tentatives peu fructueuses de mise en évidence de combinaisons typologiques récurrentes. L'introduction des particules ajoutées suit des règles variables suivant les régions, allant de la poursuite du recours à la chamotte dans certaines zones (Vaunage, Vaucluse rhodanien) à l'exclusivité des carbonates dans d'autres, au BzA1. Au BzA2a ancien, le retour d'un trait méridional antérieur, néolithique final, s'impose, avec la généralisation des carbonates pilés dans les pâtes (fig. 176 et 178). Une grande liberté d'exécution est donc partagée, correspondant à une structure de production qui ne semble pas dépasser le niveau de la maisonnée. Cependant, les analyses pétrographiques identifient clairement la circulation de certaines poteries ou ensembles de récipients, sur des distances variant d'une dizaine à une soixantaine de kilomètres. Les transferts les plus importants s'opèrent en moyenne vallée du Rhône, de la rive droite à la rive gauche du fleuve et aux marges des Préalpes. Cette mobilité des produits et des personnes ressort également de la dispersion de certaines formes et décors. Elle résulte sans doute de nécessités liées aux activités économiques, les contextes de découverte en grotte ouvrant la possibilité de déplacements d'individus peu nombreux dans le cadre d'activités pastorales. Enfin, la structuration spatio-temporelle et les conditions de mise en place des cultures du début du Bronze ancien peuvent être abordées. Au BzA1, une partition nord-sud entre entités rhodaniennes et méridionales se double, dans le Midi, de l'existence d'une mosaïque de zones différentes, qui semblent encore relever des cultures néolithiques, en Provence centrale, ou prolonger des traits antérieurs, en Vaunage, ou encore, vers le sud-ouest, être réceptrice de l'influence rhodanienne (fig. 190). Au BzA2a ancien, la distinction nord-sud opère toujours, mais à un niveau inférieur de hiérarchie, au sein d'une même entité d'ascendance rhodanienne. Les différents thèmes abordés au cours de nos travaux conduisent in fine à un ajustement de l'intitulé reflétant mieux les apports de cette opération : Composantes culturelles et premières productions céramiques du Bronze ancien dans le Sud-Est de la France. En conclusion, différentes questions sont ouvertes, qu'il s'agisse de la généralisation ou non, au Bronze ancien, d'un stade accompli de l'économie agropastorale, du stade historico-culturel Néolithique, de l'impact qu'a dû avoir le développement de la métallurgie à base cuivre face à certaines nécessités socio-économiques de détachement des contraintes bioclimatiques et contextuelles, ou encore de la compatibilité et d'articulation entre deux situations, d'évolutions sous influx oriental et méridional et de transformations internes des supports économiques du pouvoir, questions qui constituent autant de points de problématiques futures
