The development of group dynamics has multiple origin. Sociologist, by the nature of their interests, were without doubt pioneers in the study of group phenomena. Once they emancipated themselves from the static and metaphysical speculation of the precursors of scientific sociology, they concentrated largely on social change, social control and collective behavior. In evaluating their contributions to emerging the ascience of group dynamics, the most telling criticism is that their ideas were largely abstract, formal and inaccesible to objective and experimental investigation.
