On the Library-Resources

For a long time, Library-resources have been nothing but books and other printed materials. Recently all sorts of materials have come to be provided in likraries; books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, audio-visual materials, micro-cards and micro-films, etc. In school libraries must be also stocked many kinds of materials as library-resources. The largest amount of such stocks consist of book materials, because they offer opportunities to the reader to widen his reading interest and to supplement his school work. Therefore, some consideration must be given to the problem of book materials in regard to school library resources. Generally speaking, three to five volumes per pupil are the standard of a school library, but from the author's standpoint, 10 volumes per pupil in every school library are sine qua non. The next problem is to provide a collection of books balanced. There must be a scheme suggesting a definite percentage and proportion for various subjects. This scheme, however, should not be the only one to be followed, for each school may have different aims under different circumstances and then many and varied factors in this connection. Consequently the teacher librarian must attempt to select books so as to suit the requirement. The selection of books for the library is one of the most important of all the librarian's duties.
