Influence of Light Intensity and Temperature on the Response of Photosynthetic Activity of Phytoplankton at the Surface Microlayer in Lake Biwa

The present study was undertaken to clarify the infuence of light intensity and temperature on the response of photosynthetic activity of natural phytoplankton populations at a thin surface microlayer in Lake Biwa.Nitrogenous nutrients and particulate organic matter were enhanced at the surface microlayer.An optimum curve,with the optimum temperature at around 30 ℃,was obtained.A Q_10 factor for photosynthesis was calculated as 2.0 to 3.2.The photosynthetic activity increased with increasing light internsity up to some asymptotic value.The photosynthetic activity did not evidence photo-inhibition,under continuous light using fluorescent lamps.In the examination under solar radiation,on the other hand,the photo-inhibition was observed above 20 klux.The half-saturation constant(K_I)for light intensity was 2.3 to 5.9 klux.The K_I walue at the surface microlayer,in the examination under solar radiation,was much higher than in the subsurface layer.The present results indicate that in natural conditions the phytoplankton is still active in the water at the surface microlayer under the solar radiation and also the photosynthetic activity is influenced widely by light intensity of solar radiation and water temperature.琵琶湖北湖の極表面における，植物プランクトン群集の光合成活性に及ぼす照度と水温の影響を調べた。極表面水には，窒素栄養塩化合物と懸濁物質の濃縮が認められた。光合成と温度の関係を測定した結果，30℃付近に最適温度を示す最適曲線関係が得られた。光合成に対するQ＿10ファクターは，2．0～3．2と計算された。光合成活性は，ある漸近値まで照度の増加に伴って増加した。蛍光灯を光源とした連続照射の下での実験では，光合成に対する強光阻害は認められなかったが，太陽光の下では，20klux以上の照度で強光阻害が観察された。照度に対する半飽和定数（K＿I）は，、2．3～5．9kluxと計算された。太陽光の下では，極表面水において高い半飽和定数が得られた。極表面水に棲息する植物プランクトンは，太陽光の下においても，光合成の活性を保持しており，光合成活性は太陽照度と水温に大きく影響されることを示唆している
