A cadmium copper column reduction method has been widely accepted for the determination of nitrate in natural waters. This method is highly precise but poses a serious disadvantage in wastewater treatment involving toxic heavy metals. An analytical method based on the hydrazinium reduction technique was improved for more precise determination of nitrate in freshwater samples by routine spectro-photometric analysis. The effects of reagent concentrations, standing time and temperature on the reduction of nitrate to nitrite were examined. The proposed method was quantitatively determined with high accuracy.
