A Literature Review of the Learning Disabled Adult

Every day the adult with learning disabilities is faced with the problems of daily living. Such things as reading transportation schedules, filling out job applications, ordering from a menu, and paying bills that the non-learning disabled do with ease, cause tension and frustration for the adult learning disabled. It has only been in the last 20 years that programs for learning disabled children have been initiated at the elementary and secondary levels. Therefore many adults with learning disabilities have never had the opportunity to benefit from education programs designed to meet their specific needs. Of the learning disabled adult, Patschull (1980) states: The only term that would describe these persons as a total group would be \u27struggling.\u27 They are struggling to survive, dealing with a world that is complex and often seems unfair. They are struggling to cope with a problem that most do not understand (p. 27)
