The alpine Viennoise in Late Antiquity : Territorial and Urban Restructuring in the Western Alps (3rd-7th century AD)

La présente thèse vise à revaloriser l’intérêt et l’importance des Alpes occidentales au cours de l’Antiquité tardive. L’enjeu a été d’identifier les occupations se rapportant à la période qui se développe entre la fin du IIIe et le début du VIIe s., de comparer leurs trajectoires évolutives et d’analyser le maillage général dans un espace initialement défini comme la Viennoise alpine. Une géographie singulière déterminée par ses atouts au cœur de dynamiques fortes de l’Antiquité tardive, au contact de pôles attractifs, voies de communication et territoires hostiles. Toutefois, même si c’est avant tout la Viennoise alpine qui a occupé l’essentiel de l’attention de ce travail, le projet vise une perspective plus globale étendue à l’échelle de la partie occidentale du massif ; il s’inscrit dans le long terme et ambitionne de développer les outils pour renouveler une documentation trop parcellaire et inégale. Au regard de sa situation géographique centrale au sein de la Viennoise alpine et de la possibilité d’un renouvellement de la documentation, le cas de l’agglomération ainsi que la cité antique de Grenoble a été privilégié pour aborder les spécificités alpines des dynamiques urbaines et territoriales. Développement urbain, militarisation, émergence du christianisme s’entremêlent et restructurent en profondeur l’organisation d’un espace bien plus occupé qu’il n’était attendu. Dans cette perspective, de nouvelles recherches de terrain, études et synthèses doivent venir nourrir cette recherche relative à l’évolution de la société de l’Antiquité tardive dans l’espace géographique des Alpes occidentales.The present thesis aims to re-evaluate the interest and importance of the Western Alps during Late Antiquity. The challenge was to identify the occupations related to the period that developed between the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 7th century, to compare their evolutionary trajectories and to analyse the general network in a space initially defined as the Alpine Viennese. A singular geography determined by its assets at the heart of the strong dynamics of Late Antiquity, in contact with attractive poles, communication routes and hostile territories. However, even if it is above all the Viennese Alps that has occupied the main attention of this work, the project aims at a more global perspective extended to the scale of the western part of the massif; it is part of the long term and aims at developing tools to renew a too fragmented and uneven documentation. In view of its central geographical location in the heart of the Alpine Viennoise and the possibility of a renewal of the documentation, the case of the agglomeration as well as the ancient city of Grenoble has been privileged in order to address the Alpine specificities of urban and territorial dynamics. Urban development, militarisation and the emergence of Christianity intermingled and restructured in depth the organisation of a space that was much busier than expected. In this perspective, new fieldwork, studies and syntheses must be carried out to nourish this research on the evolution of society in Late Antiquity in the geographical space of the Western Alps
