The Social Uses of Reflexivity : a Contribution to Historical Sociology Through the Study of the Word and Its Meanings

En mobilisant diverses traditions de sciences sociales, cette thèse de doctorat propose d’étudier dans une perspective de sociologie historique l’idée de réflexivité, saisie par une reconstitution des emplois du mot. La première partie de la thèse tente par l’utilisation de bases de données numériques de reconstruire de manière systématique les principales séries d’usages des mots "reflexivity" et "réflexivité", depuis les premières utilisations d’un de ces termes repérées en Angleterre au XVIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin des années 1980. Ces occurrences sont mises en relation avec l’histoire et la structure des espaces anglophone et francophone dans lesquels elles s’inscrivent. En constatant empiriquement leur forte présence dans le lexique des sciences humaines et sociales à partir de la fin des années 1980, la deuxième partie du travail abandonne la reconstruction systématique des usages des termes. Deux séries importantes d’usages considérées comme cas du possible sont étudiées notamment à l’aide d’archives et d’entretiens. La première est l’utilisation faite par Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens et Scott Lash de "Reflexive Modernization" entre 1986 et 1994, la seconde celle faite par Pierre Bourdieu de "réflexivité" entre 1987 et 2001. Un chapitre conclusif reconstitue les interactions entretenues par ces utilisateurs du terme. Les principaux résultats de l’enquête sont synthétisés et mis en perspective dans la conclusion de la thèse.Using a sociological and historical lens, this Ph.D. thesis analyzes the idea of reflexivity through the ways in which the uses of the word have evolved in the English and French contexts.The first part of the thesis employs numeric databases to systematically reconstruct the main series of uses of "reflexivity" and "réflexivité" from the introduction of "reflexivity" in XVIIth Century England to the widespread presence of both words in the late 1980s. These occurrences are related to the history and the structure of the anglophone and francophone spaces of which they are a part.The second part of the thesis considers the increase in the occurrence of these words within the field of human and social sciences during the late 1980s. The thesis draws from archival materials and interviews in order to evaluate case studies that focus on two principal series of uses. The first series concerns the use of the phrase "Reflexive Modernization" popularized by Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens and Scott Lash between 1986 and 1994, the second is the use of the word "reflexivity" by Pierre Bourdieu between 1987 and 2001. A concluding chapter evaluates the interactions between the users of the word.The main findings of the inquiry are summarized and put into perspective in the conclusion of the thesis
