Center-left and left wing parties in the local government election in 2006

BEFORE THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT election in 2006 parties of the Polish left wing were going to sing an agreement, which would give them a chance for a favorable result in the election. Similarly to the past years, each party became divided into those who support the idea of a wide coalition of left wing and central wing parties and the advocates of a pure left wing coalition. In the effect a coalition, which core was formed by the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), Social Democracy of Poland (SdPL), Labor union (UP), Democratic Party – demokraci.pl, was created as a drive towards central - left party. Own independent lists were issued by the Polish Labor Party (PPP) supported by minor parties that insist on creating pure left wing coalition and denying that some parties, like SLD have true left affiliation. The article presents the process of making the mentioned agreements and results achieved by each party in the local government election. Author concentrates on results in the local assemblies and competition of candidates supported by left wing parties in running for the post of mayor or president. In the author’s opinion we may say that the left wing achieved a moderate success in the election, which boils down to remain as the third power on the political scene and the chance to continue cooperation in the coalition of The Left and The Democrats
