My analysis shows that it is the desire for ecstasy which finally determines the action and psychology of the main characters of Mare Foecunditatis (The Sea of Fertility), the last work of Yukio Mishima (1925-1970). It is a quad-rilogy consisting of Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn and Five Signs of a God's Decay. Soon after the completion of the work but before the publication of the last volume, the author killed himself by imitating the action of one of these fictional characters. As a result, the reaction to this last work of Mishima's is tinged with a sense of impurity which mars its artistic effect.
