This study takes up a basic problem of Japanese language expressions; Kakikotoba and Hanashikotoba, and tries to elucidate their meaning and nature referring to the Genbunitch (Unification of Written and Spoken Japanese) Movement, sentence style of the newspapers in those days and ideas in the field of education. This study tries also to find a pattern in classical written expressions that still remain in modern Japanese sentences. In this section, the study takes up the Genbunitch Movement, crossexamining opinions of the two groups; the Genbunitch (Kogo, Hanashikotoba) group and the Bungo (Kakikotoba) group.
