中尾佐助教授退官記念号a) The following six aspects of Burmese Buddhism will be treated.1) To what extent the world of sangha can be said to be the center of Buddhism.2) To what extent Buddhist belief can be said to be canonical.3) The differences between Buddhist factors and non-Buddhist factors or magical factors.4) The principles by which Buddhist organizations operate.5) Buddhist mentality6) Messianic or millennialistic religious movements.b) From a religious system point of view, Burmese religious life will be grasped through three principles which intersect in their world-view.1) The world of sangha / the world of laymen : this differentiation is basic to a Buddhist world.2) Practical interpretation of the doctrines / Normative interpretation of them : this differentiation is flexible and represents the complexity of Buddhism.3) The individual / the group : it is not easy to see that there are any principles of organization, and it is said that in Burmese society dyadic relationships function as social ties. The position of the individual and group in religious terms and in social terms must be discerned and analyzed. On the basis of the study of these principles, we shall analyze how the Burmese view Buddhism.c) In the Burmese language, there are several important key-terms like kutho (merit), kan (karma). pon, awza, gon (power) and so forth, which have profound Buddhist ramifications, but which are also used casually in daily life. Behind such native terms, there may be some keys for an understanding of Burmese society
