National audienceThe rise in frequency of radiofrequency oscillators towards millimeter waves is limited by the degradation of the quality factor of the resonators in these frequency ranges. Therefore, the low propagation losses of optical fibers can be taken advantage of by constituting the high quality factor delay line of an opto-electronic oscillator, allowing the oscillation of a low phase noise RF wave in the centimeter or millimeter range. Quality factors of the order of 10^5 are most often necessary in order to achieve competitive performance with microwave techniques and justify the use of fiber spool with a length of up to several kilometers.
